What I Learned {December 2013}

I’ve become more of a noticer of life, since writing these monthly wrap-up posts. And again, I am linking up with Emily Freeman and her beautiful community, to share all we learned in December. So in no particular order, here’s what I’ve learned this past month.

1. Voxer preferences can be changed. My finger used to get tired of holding down the walkie-talkie button while I recorded a message. But once I changed the preferences, I’m now able to push the button once to start recording, and then a second time to stop.

2. I love podcasts so much, I’m beginning to think I’d enjoy hosting one someday. Yikes! Did I just say that out loud?

3. Going 81 mph is expensive. I know. Just don’t ask. I’ll blame it on being tired, driving home from work, engrossed in a podcast, and my dirty rearview mirror. And yes, I am living proof, nurses get tickets too.

4. The verb ‘to smell’, in Spanish, is oler. And is an irregularly conjugated verb in the present tense. I often speak Spanish at work, and manage fairly well. But vocabulary unrelated to labor and delivery is more difficult for me, as well as Spanish slang, and anyone talking too fast. The other day, oler was my new word for the day. Never mind how or why I needed to know. I’ll just leave that up to your imagination.

5. Singing as a family is a way to become a gift. We were asked by the Senior’s group at our church to provide the program for their Christmas luncheon. We practiced all of November, and aren’t sure who felt like they received the better gift, them or us.

6. Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook actually means give, give, give, ask. And there are people who Crush It!
while working The 4-Hour Workweek. Whew. It’s all enough information for a lifetime. Say no more.

7. I am reminded, failure is never as final as not trying at all. I was once a girl who thought she couldn’t really memorize scripture. I thought it was too hard for me. But after failing at several challenges, I have memorized Romans Chapter 1 and Romans Chapter 8 this year. And it has been such a rich experience in the context of community, possible only because I didn’t give up or stop trying. We are beginning Chapter 12 this week, and I’m looking forward to finishing #theromansproject by Easter–pressing on together, two verses at a time. Join us?

8. Receipts in a wallet can get out of control easily, especially at Christmas time. Don’t ask me how I know. I’ve heard it said the organizational appearance of your wallet is an indication of the organization of your life. And if that is true, I’m definitely in trouble.

9. Pat Flynn is so inspiring. If you do anything online, you’re seriously missing out on a ton of valuable information and advice if you haven’t heard him. He lives here in Southern CA, and also has an amazing podcast too.

10. The Greatest Gift made for the richest advent ever. Each day I reflected on God’s gift in sending Christ, His mercy, and His grace. And I was reminded day after day, I can have as much God as I want, whenever I want, wherever I am.
